Fall Home Maintenance and Repair Checklist
Now that summer is over, it’s time to start thinking about getting your home ready for the fall and winter months ahead. No matter which part of the country you live in, fall is a great time to take care of the small repairs and maintenance that can make a big difference.
House Doctors wants to help you keep your home well maintained and ready for the upcoming seasons. Here’s a fall home checklist to help keep your home functioning at its best during the upcoming seasons.
- Gutters – Inspect your gutters and down spouts. Be sure to clean the leaves and debris from the gutters as well. Consider installing gutter guards for maintenance free gutters for years to come
- Windows and Doors – Seal any gaps or possible passages for air or insects to enter around the windows and doors with caulk or weather-stripping
- Furnace – Inspect your heating system to detect any issues or problems before the cold weather comes
- Outdoor Water Fixtures – Completely drain outdoor faucets and irrigation systems to prepare them for the cold and sometimes freezing weather
- Roof – Inspect your roof for any loose or damaged shingles that could pose problems during the winter months
- Painting – Touch up any peeling or faded paint both inside and outside your home
- Decks and Porches – Inspect decks and porches for loose boards, nails or cracks and repair them so they don’t worsen over the fall and winter months
- Furniture – Clean your outdoor furniture and cover them to sustain the winter weather
- Trim trees and bushes – Trim trees and bushes near the house
- Filters – Replace or clean your dirty furnace filters
- Fireplaces – If your home has a fireplace, be sure to inspect it for soot or build up before lighting up this winter
